For this week, we decided to learn about Hurling. Hurling is a sport played outdoor on a field similar to a football field. There are teams of 15 people who compete to get the most points in a certain about of time that depends on which level the sport is being played at. The way that you get points is to get the ball in the H shaped goal. You do this by hitting the ball known as a sliotar, with a stick known as a Hurley between players. This can be done in a combination of ways you can pass to yourself similar to lacrosse, or pass to your teammates. To score the actual points, you can either hit the ball into the bottom part of the H which is a net, this gets you 3 points. Another way to score points is to hit the ball through the panels of the H and this gets you one point. In a usual game of Hurling, the game is played in 2, 30 minute halves which adds up to a 60 minute game. Unlike other sports, if there is a tie, the game is replayed. There is no overtime or extra innings. There are a few other ways to move the ball up the field. You can kick it, hit it across the ground, or hit it in the air. Some things that you cannot do include, taking more than 4 steps with the ball in hand or handle the ball while it is on the ground. On defense, the players can hit the ball out of other players positions or shoulder them to knock it out of their hands. The game is usually fast paced, and the female version of this sport is known as Camogie.
